Ukrainian refugees contribute tens of billions to EU economies

The number of working Ukrainian refugees in Europe is constantly growing.

If in the first year of the full-scale war there were no more than 10% of them, in the near future the number of employed Ukrainians in the EU will exceed 50%, including thanks to young Ukrainians who will graduate. This, in turn, has an active impact on the income of the states that have accepted them.

According to various sources, there are currently about five million Ukrainians in the EU, but in practice there may be more refugees. Currently, about 1.6 million people are employed (more than 37% of the total).

In each country, Ukrainians form their own level of gross domestic product. The analyst suggests calling it the gross community product (GCP). The largest GGP of Ukrainians is in Germany – almost $52 billion, because more than a million Ukrainian refugees are living there. The second largest GCG of Ukrainians in Poland is almost $17 billion. And due to the extremely high per capita gross product in Ireland, the GCF of Ukrainians here slightly exceeds $10 billion. The total GDP of Ukrainians in the EU is $175 billion, which is almost equal to the GDP of Ukraine in 2024 ($188 billion), where 28-30 million people live.

It should be noted that while in September 2022, 68% of refugees planned to return to Ukraine, at the end of 2024, the share decreased to 57%..
