Ukrainian biomethane could become a key factor in reducing the European Union’s dependence on Russian gas, Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk said.
The EU is also assisting Ukraine in harmonising its natural gas legislation to facilitate biomethane exports. According to Kolisnyk, this will allow Ukrainian biomethane to displace Russian gas from the European market.
European Commission representative Yolanda Garcia Mesquita noted that Ukraine has significant potential for biomethane production. According to her, this resource could replace natural gas in the EU market in the future, strengthening Europe’s energy independence. It is noted that Ukraine is gradually becoming an important player in ensuring Europe’s energy security, using its unique resources and technologies to develop renewable energy.
Kolisnyk stressed that Ukraine has significant resources for the development of wind, solar and geothermal energy. To strengthen regional potential, the Ministry of Energy is working on creating energy independence passports for each region.
