European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announces a €6 billion loan funded by proceeds from frozen Russian assets to develop drone production for Ukraine.
Von der Leyen emphasized that drones play a key role in the war, as they account for more than two-thirds of the destroyed Russian equipment. At the same time, she said, Russia is actively building up its capabilities using Iranian Shahed drones and taking advantage of mass industrial production.
She added that the EU has the opportunity to use its industrial strength to support Ukraine in the war against drones.
“We can help Ukraine transform its innovation potential into a combat advantage and promote joint industrialization. That is why I am announcing the disbursement of €6 billion in advance from the ERA loan and the establishment of the Drone Alliance with Ukraine,” von der Leyen said.
She emphasized that Ukraine has innovative potential, but needs to scale up, which Europe can provide, so that Ukraine retains its advantage and Europe strengthens its position.
We would also like to remind you that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive more than 4 million drones by the end of the year, and Germany will invest €400 million in the production of drones in Ukraine.
