Sweden to allocate $187 million to help Ukraine

The Swedish government has announced a reallocation of its 2025 international aid budget, prioritizing support for Ukraine and addressing urgent humanitarian needs in critical regions worldwide.

In response to the deteriorating global security environment and a significant reduction in aid from the United States, Sweden will phase out its development cooperation strategies with Afghanistan and the Asia-Pacific region.

Instead, Stockholm will allocate SEK 1.67 billion (approximately \$183.7 million) to support Ukraine, as well as humanitarian efforts in Sudan, Gaza, and Yemen—areas currently facing severe humanitarian crises.

“Sweden cannot fully compensate for the reduction in U.S. assistance, but we are doing everything we can to support Ukraine and save lives in the most vulnerable regions,” the government stated.

The budget shift affects almost all regions, except Ukraine and its neighbors. Some thematic aid programs will also be reduced, though without breaching existing commitments. The Swedish government emphasized that support for Ukraine remains a top priority, stressing that “Ukraine is defending not only its own freedom, but also the freedom of Europe, in the face of Russia’s brutal aggression targeting civilian infrastructure.”

This move underscores Sweden’s firm political commitment to remain one of Ukraine’s key partners during a time of war and growing geopolitical instability.
