Spain has become the first country to officially deploy the full lineup of Vector and Twister reconnaissance drones developed by the German company Quantum Systems.
Under a contract with the Spanish Ministry of Defence, 91 Vector systems — totaling 182 medium-range drones — will be delivered in 2025. Additionally, the Spanish Air Force will receive Twister drones, with an option to expand the program in the future.
What Are Vector and Twister?
Vector is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone that combines the agility of a multirotor with the endurance of a fixed-wing aircraft. It can stay airborne for up to 180 minutes and cover distances of over 30 km. Its modular design, advanced sensors, AES-256 encrypted communications, thermal and optical imaging, and weather resistance make it ideal for tactical reconnaissance on land and at sea.
Twister is a lightweight quadcopter (under 3 kg) designed for short, high-mobility missions in challenging environments — including GPS-denied zones. It offers up to 45 minutes of flight time and delivers real-time video and telemetry, making it a valuable tool for special forces and infantry in urban operations.
Integrated into the ISTAR System
Both drones will operate within the integrated ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) system — a unified platform for gathering, processing, and sharing reconnaissance data across various branches of the armed forces. Spain is the first country to implement the full “family architecture” of Quantum Systems drones, ensuring seamless interoperability and flexibility at all command levels.
Why It Matters
This contract not only enhances Spain’s military capabilities in line with NATO standards but also strengthens the position of European manufacturers in the global UAV market. For Quantum Systems, the deal represents a major strategic milestone and highlights the company’s growing role in supporting allied defence needs across Europe. Spain’s example is likely to set a precedent for other EU countries and NATO allies seeking advanced, integrated drone solutions.
