The United States has announced that arms and military aid supplies to Ukraine will increase by the end of the year. However, Washington has warned that after 2027, the United States will cease to be NATO’s main defence pillar – a role that Europe will have to take on.
The US has emphasised that support for Ukraine will continue, but Europe must be prepared for a NATO in which the US will no longer be the “automatic first responder,” as the Indo-Pacific region remains the priority for American defence doctrine.
At the same time, 21 countries have already joined the PURL programme to purchase American weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with total commitments of $4.18 billion. Last week, Australia and New Zealand joined the programme, expanding the circle of participants beyond NATO for the first time.
In total, the allies contributed approximately $1 billion to PURL over the course of a week. The commitments made by the participating countries are aimed at providing the Ukrainian army with critically needed equipment and strengthening its air defence capabilities. In particular, Slovenia will allocate approximately €43 million to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capabilities by the end of the year as part of PURL.
