Military Support for Ukraine and the Results of the G7 Summit in Canada

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who interrupted his visit to Canada due to Russia’s deadly attack on Ukraine and the US president’s departure from the summit, summarized the results of his meeting in Canada.

According to him, during the talks, decisions were made to increase military assistance to Ukraine, to receive new tranches of frozen Russian assets, and to agree on further sanctions against the aggressor state. The partners also expressed their readiness to rebuild Ukraine together after the war. In particular:

1.Canada allocates a new military aid package to Ukraine worth CAD 2 billion ($1.5 billion) and imposes new sanctions against Russia. The package will include drones, helicopters, and ammunition. As part of the expansion of sanctions, restrictions were imposed on a number of individuals and more than 40 organizations in Russia and abroad.

The sanctions include companies that help Moscow circumvent restrictions, as well as more than 200 vessels of Russia’s shadow fleet. In addition, Ukraine will receive a CAD 2 billion ($1.5 billion) loan from Canada, which will be covered by interest from frozen Russian assets.

2.Germany also assured that it would continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine. And Chancellor Friedrich Merz is convinced that pressure on Russia will increase.

In addition, the G7 did make a statement on the Russian-Ukrainian war in a statement on behalf of the presidency. They emphasized that they support diplomatic efforts, including those of US President Donald Trump, to end the war and increase pressure on Russia.

“The G7 leaders are determined to consider all options to maximize pressure on Russia, including financial sanctions,” the statement said.
