According to Energoatom CEO Petro Kotin, Ukraine plans to add 10 small modular reactors (SMRs) to the power system by 2050.
“We see that we have opportunities and there is a need for small modular reactors up to 3,000 MW,” he said.
“Energoatom already has a number of agreements with leading developers of small modular reactors, including Holtec International. According to Kotin, many companies around the world are developing SMRs, which is evidence of the development of nuclear technology.
At the same time, he noted that he could not say how safe the operation of small modular reactors is in a full-scale war. But the head of Energoatom emphasized that SMRs, according to the developers, are safer and smaller than large nuclear reactors, and can operate in places where there is no grid at all.
