Ukraine becomes vice-chair of the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage

In addition, five more cultural heritage sites in Ukraine were granted the status of “under enhanced protection”.

For the first time, Ukraine was elected vice-chair of the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy.

The UNESCO Committee is headed by Finland. Japan became the rapporteur. Representatives of El Salvador, Mali, and Qatar were also elected vice-chairs.

“Ukraine has become the Vice-Chair of the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict for the first time. This is another victory for Ukrainian cultural diplomacy,” said Rostyslav Karandieiev, acting Minister of Culture and Information Policy.

This took place at the 18th meeting of the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.

The committee heard a report on the situation with cultural heritage in Ukraine in the context of Russian aggression.

The participants reviewed UNESCO’s technical assistance to Ukraine for the protection of cultural heritage, as well as support for the verification of cultural heritage sites included in the UNESCO List of Sites under Enhanced Protection.

In addition, five more cultural heritage sites in Ukraine were granted the status of “under enhanced protection”.

Following the meeting, the participants adopted a decision of the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
